Etsy Fee Calculator
Etsy stacks a transaction fee, a payment processing fee and a listing fee on every sale — and the 6.5% is charged on shipping too, not just the item price. Offsite Ads can add another 15% on top when a buyer arrives from an off-site ad.
All amounts in USD. One unit = one order.
| Where the money goes | Amount |
|---|
Break-even price: $13.50 — below this you lose money on every sale.
Work backwards from the profit you want.
This accounts for the item price, shipping charged, every active fee, your item cost, shipping cost and monthly fixed costs spread over the units above.
On the example above, Etsy takes 10.4% of every sale. That is the number to compare, not the headline percentage — the fixed fees and the shipping-inclusive fee base are what make the effective rate diverge from the advertised one.
The full fee schedule
Every charge Etsy applies to a United States order, and when each one bites.
| Fee | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 / item | Per item listed. Auto-renews every 4 months if unsold. |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | 6.5% of the item price plus shipping charged. |
| Payment processing | 3.0% + $0.25 | 3% + $0.25 per order in the US. |
| Offsite Ads optional | 15.0% | Only when the sale is attributed to an off-site ad. Mandatory for sellers above the annual threshold. |
How the maths works
The calculator does exactly three things: it builds the fee base, applies every active fee, then subtracts your costs. No hidden steps.
Optional fees such as Offsite Ads are excluded from those percentages until you switch them on, because they only apply to a share of orders. When enabled, they simply add to the rate.
What this calculator leaves out
- Sales tax collected by Etsy is not counted as revenue, so it is excluded here.
- Etsy also charges a $0.25 fee to set up a shop in some regions — one-off, not modelled.
- Currency conversion and regulatory operating fees vary by country and are not included.
Common questions
Does Etsy charge a fee on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus whatever shipping you charge the buyer. That is why raising the item price and offering 'free shipping' is often cheaper than charging shipping separately — you still pay the percentage either way, but you do not pay it twice on a higher combined total.
What is Offsite Ads and can I turn it off?
Offsite Ads is Etsy's programme that promotes your listings on external sites. When a sale is attributed to one of those ads, Etsy takes 15% of the order. Sellers under the annual sales threshold can opt out; above it, participation is mandatory. Flip the Offsite Ads switch in the calculator to see the impact.
Why is my actual payout lower than this calculator?
Three common reasons: sales tax that Etsy collects and remits (it is revenue on the order but never yours), currency conversion fees if your bank account is in a different currency, and Etsy Plus or other subscriptions. The first two are excluded here by design.

Keep going
If the number above is worse than you expected, the fix is usually one of two things: raise the price, or move the shipping into the item price. Our reverse pricing calculator tells you the price that hits your target; the fee base guide explains why shipping is charged twice.
